The Currahee Legacy
The 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment (1-506th INF), part of the historic 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), carries a legacy that traces back to the legendary Currahees of World War II and the soldiers later recognized through Band of Brothers. The nickname “Currahee”, meaning “stand alone” in Cherokee, reflects the regiment’s long standing tradition of toughness, independence, resilience, and combat readiness.
During the 2005–2006 timeframe, 1-506th Infantry “Red Currahee” participated in combat operations supporting the Global War on Terror, particularly in Iraq, conducting combat patrols, counterinsurgency operations, route security, raids, and stability missions during one of the most demanding periods of the war.
